Bernoulli Society life is active and this is witnessed by a number of initiatives reported in this issue, concerning BS officers, journals and various scientific meetings related to the Society in some way or another.
This issue also contains an article of great importance to us. At the 5th World Congress of the Bernoulli Society, Professor Jef Teugels, who was President of Bernoulli Society in 1995-97, presented a talk on the history of the Society, explaining where its roots are and how these evolved into the present form. Professor Teugels has responded very enthusiantically to the proposal of writing up his report, and I am most pleased to present here the first part of his article; the second and final part will appear in the next issue of Bernoulli News.
In addition, I would like to thank all other people that contributed to the production of this issue, with a special mention to Ank Lepping for the careful proof-reading.
