    The treasurership of BS is about to change. The following message is from the President of the Society:

    On 1 January 2001 Mathisca de Gunst will become Treasurer of the Bernoulli Society. She succeeds Allan Gut, who has filled this role in exemplary fashion since 1997. On behalf of the Bernoulli Society I would like to thank him for this service.

    Mathisca de Gunst works since 1988 as a mathematical statistician in the Department of Mathematics of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She got her PhD in 1988 from the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. Her research interest is in the area of stochastic modelling and statistical analysis of biological processes.     Rainer Dahlhaus is BS representative on the Programm Committee for the 54th Biennial Session of the International Statistical Institute (includes meetings of the Bernoulli Society, the International Association for Statistical Computing, the International Association of Survey Statisticians, the International Association for Official Statistics and the International Association for Statistical Education), to be held in Berlin, Germany, in August 2003.     Francisco Aranda Ordaz Award:
    Best Doctoral Thesis in the areas of probability and statistics

    The Latin American Regional Committee of the Bernoulli Society announces the third version of the Francisco Aranda-Ordaz thesis competition, created to honor the memory of a distinguished young mexican investigator. It is open to doctoral theses written by Latin American students in the areas of probability and statistics, regardless of the country of the university offering the degree. This third version of the competition is open to those theses officially completed within the period January 1997 - December 2000.

    The Committee will nominate four finalists and the best one will be invited to give a conference in the VIII CLAPEM (Latin American Congress in Probability and Statistics) to be held in La Habana, Cuba in November 2001.

    Those applying are asked to submit three copies of the theses to
