Kendall Award for Young Researchers – Call for Nominations The Award Committee invites nominations for the Bernoulli Society-Royal Statistical Society David G. Kendall Award for Young Researchers. The award is in honor of David G. Kendall, who was the first president of the Bernoulli Society, and was awarded the Guy Medal in Silver (1955) and in Gold (1981) of the RSS. The 2025 edition of the award is organized for young researchers in Probability Theory. Nominees should be researchers with significant achievements and great potential in their research field, who are members of either the Bernoulli Society or the Royal Statistical Society, and who obtained their PhD after January 1, 2017. We particularly encourage nominations from under-represented groups. The nomination process is open from 1 April 2025 and closes on 30 June 2025. The complete call can be found here. 2025 General Assembly and Transfer of the Bernoulli Book Our next General Assembly – including the transfer of the Bernoulli book and the introduction of the new Executive Committee and Council – will take place at the SPA 2025 meeting in Wroclaw, Poland (July 14–18, 2025) rather than the ISI World Statistics Congress (October 5–9, 2025). This break with tradition is due to the ISI WSC being exceptionally moved to autumn instead of its usual timing in the summer, thus not being well-aligned with our own administrative calendar. European Meeting of Statisticians - Call for Host Proposals With EMS 2026 in Lugano approaching, we invite those interested in hosting EMS 2027 or EMS 2029 to submit proposals. Ethel Newbold Prize – Recipient We are pleased to announce that the 2025 Ethel Newbold Prize has been awarded to Po-Ling Loh (University of Cambridge, UK). Topics include all aspects of extreme value analysis, probabilistic and statistical models and their applications. Activities include plenary, invited and contributed paper sessions, a poster competition, a student paper competition, and a data analysis challenge. There will also be a short course (June 22), with presentations by Anne Sabourin (Université Paris Cité, France) and Anthony Davison (EPFL, Switzerland). Stochastic Processes and their Applications 2025 July 14–18, 2025 The 44th Conference on Stochastic Processes and their Applications will be held in July 2025 in Wrocław, Poland. The Bernoulli Society's Council Meeting, General Assembly and installation of the new Executive and Council will take place during this event. SPA conferences are organised under patronage of the Bernoulli Society and can justifiably be regarded as the most important international scientific meeting on the theory and applications of stochastic processes. They are held annually except for the years when the World Congress in Probability and Statistics takes place. European Young Statisticians Meeting 2025 July 21–25, 2025 The 24th European Young Statisticians Meeting will take place in July 2025, hosted by Collegio Carlo Alberto in Turin, Italy. The EYSMs are held every two years under the auspices of the European Regional Committee of the Bernoulli Society. The aim is to provide a scientific forum for the next generation of European researchers in probability theory and statistics. Participation is by invitation only. Check the conference website for further details. ISI World Statistics Congress 2025 October 5–9, 2025 The 65th ISI World Statistics Congress will be held in October 2025 in The Hague, Netherlands. It takes place every two years, since 1887, and it represents the leading congress on statistics and data science worldwide. The programme will span the full field of statistics and data science including academia, business, industry, government and official statistics in line with the breadth of the ISI and the Associations affiliated with the ISI. Please note that the conference has been postponed from July to October. Refer to the conference website for any updates, as well as for further details on the conference. Latin American Congress of Probability and Mathematical Statistics 2026 March 2-6, 2026 The 17th Latin American Congress of Probability and Mathematical Statistics will be held in March 2026, in Montevideo, Uruguay. The congress, promoted by the Latin American Society of Probability and Mathematical Statistics and the Latin American Regional Committee of the Bernoulli Society, is the main event in these fields in the region. It occurs every two/three years and attracts researchers and students from the most important Latin American centers. It has already been organized in Venezuela, Uruguay, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Cuba, Peru, Colombia, and Costa Rica. To mark the occasion, we have introduced a "50 year logo" (below, and on our homepage banner). Feel free to use it in any fitting context to celebrate our Society. Panki Kim (SNU, South Korea) has become the new Chair of the Committee for Conferences on Stochastic Processes, taking over from Claudio Landim as of February 2024. Ajay Jasra (Chinese University of Hong Kong, China) has been elected as the new Chair of the East-Asian and Pacific Regional Committee, succeeding Zengjing Chen as of February 2024. We extend our sincere gratitude to Claudio Landim and Zengjing Chen for their dedicated service over the past years. New Researcher Award – Call for Applications The Bernoulli Society welcomes applications to the 2025 New Researcher Award. Each awardee shall deliver a talk at a special invited session during the 65th ISI World Statistics Congress to be held in The Hague from October 5-10, 2025, and will receive a funding up to 1000 EUR to offset travel and other expenses. Bernoulli News will publish their pictures and a paragraph about their work. Eligible candidates are active researchers in Mathematical Statistics who obtained the PhD degree on or after June 15th, 2019, and who are regular members of the Bernoulli Society. An extension may be given to those having had disruptions after receiving the PhD, such as parenthood. Diversity among the awardees is one of the Society’s goals, and therefore women and members of under- represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Wolfgang Doeblin Prize – Call for Nominations The Bernoulli Society welcomes nominations for the 2024 Wolfgang Doeblin Prize. The Wolfgang Doeblin Prize, which was founded in 2011 and is generously sponsored by Springer, is awarded biannually to a single individual who is in the beginning of his or her mathematical career, for outstanding research in the field of probability theory. Michael Talagrand Wins 2024 Abel Prize Michel Talagrand awarded the 2024 Abel Prize «for his groundbreaking contributions to probability theory and functional analysis, with outstanding applications in mathematical physics and statistics». The Abel Prize, established in 2002, is named after Niels Henrik Abel, Norway’s greatest mathematician throughout the times. Sad News It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Professor Wolfgang Wefelmeyer. He passed away peacefully on January 15th, 2024. Barndorff-Nielsen Memorial Conference May 29–31, 2024 We are happy to share the announcement of the Ole E. Barndorff-Nielsen Memorial Conference, taking place at the Department of Mathematics, Aarhus University, Denmark. The aim of the conference is to cover many of the numerous fields of science that Ole E. Barndorff-Nielsen contributed to and to address recent research developments in these fields. The Bernoulli Book, symbolizing the presidency, was presented to Victor Panaretos, who officially assumed the position of president of Bernoulli Society for the years 2023–2025. Call for Nominations: President-Elect and Council Members At the General Assembly of the Bernoulli Society, held on July 18th, 2023, a Nominating Committee was established. It consists of Nancy Reid (Chair), Zengjing Chen, Claudio Landim, Victor M. Panaretos, Sonia Petrone, Mark Podolskij, Gesine Reinert, Leonardo T. Rolla, Arno Siri-Jégousse, Jingwen Song, Jeff Yao (non-voting). The task of the committee is to make nominations for the office of President-Elect (2025–2027) and six ordinary Council members (2025–2029). Winner of Ethel Newbold Prize 2023 Lester Mackey (Stanford University and Microsoft Research New England) has become the fifth Ethel Newbold Prize Winner. The Prize Committee consisted of Gesine Reinert (Chair), Adrian Röllin and Susan Murphy. During the 64th ISI WSC in Ottawa, on July 20th, 2023, Lester Mackey gave a lecture entitled Advances in Distribution Compression. More details about this award can be found here. Willem van Zwet Medal Ceremony Adam Jakubowski presented the Willem van Zwet Medal to Thomas Valentin Mikosch (University of Copenhagen, Denmark). The ceremony took place during the opening of the 34th European Meeting of Statisticians in Warsaw, on July 3rd, 2023. Aad van der Vaart elected a member of the Academy of Europe Aad van der Vaart (TU Delft, Netherlands) has been elected a member of the Academia Europaea (Academy of Europe). Academia Europaea, established in 1988, is the pan-European Academy of Sciences, Humanities and Letters. Sad News It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of two esteemed colleagues. Professor Peter J. Brockwell passed away peacefully on July 5th, 2023, surrounded by his family. Professor C. R. Rao, too, left us on August 22nd, 2023, in the presence of his loved ones. The Bernoulli Society extends its sincere condolences to their families.

New Editors of Bernoulli Society Bulletin e-Briefs and Bernoulli News It has been a pleasure to serve as the E-Briefs bulletin editor for the last two years. I would like to thank all Officers, Council members, Committee chairs, and Editors of the Bernoulli Society, as well as all other members of the Bernoulli Society, for their promptness in providing information. My special thanks go to Claudia Klüppelberg for the very warm welcome, and to Adam Jakubowski and Leonardo Rolla for their help and support. I am also thankful to Carlos Améndola, who shared his experience with me regarding this job.
The General Assembly 2023 The Bernoulli Society General Assembly has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 18, 2023, from 17:50 till 18:30, during the 64th ISI World Statistics Congress in Ottawa.
New President-Elect and Council Members The Nomination Committee, chaired by the President-Elect Victor Panaretos, sent their report to the Scientific Secretary in September 2022 with the following list of candidates:
The Scientific Secretary Song Xi Chen submitted the report of the Nomination Committee to the ordinary members of the Council for additional suggestions. No further nominations were made. The Executive Committee and the Council approved the above nominations in October 2022. According to Section 9 of the Statutes, these candidates are declared elected without vote, pending final approval at the next General Assembly in July 2023.
Bernoulli Society and Royal Statistical Society David G. Kendall Award for Young Researchers – call for nominations This joint BS and RSS Award is in honor of David G. Kendall, who was the first president of the Bernoulli Society, and was awarded the Guy Medal in Silver (1955) and in Gold (1981) of the RSS. Willem van Zwet Medal awarded to Thomas Mikosch The second awardee of the Willem van Zwet Medal is Thomas Valentin Mikosch (University of Copenhagen, Denmark). Bernoulli Society New Researcher Award 2024 - call for applications The Bernoulli Society welcomes applications to the New Researcher Award 2024. Eligible candidates are active researchers in Probability Theory who obtained the PhD degree on or after April 30th, 2018, and who are regular members of the Bernoulli Society. An extension may be given to those having had disruptions after receiving the PhD, such as parenthood. Diversity among the awardees is one of the Society's goals, and therefore women and members of under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Bernoulli Society and Royal Statistical Society David G. Kendall Award for Young Researchers – call for nominations This joint BS and RSS Award is in honor of David G. Kendall, who was the first president of the Bernoulli Society, and was awarded the Guy Medal in Silver (1955) and in Gold (1981) of the RSS. The 2023 edition of the award is organized for young researchers in Mathematical Statistics. The winners of Ito Prize 2023 The prize honors the memory and celebrates the legacy of Professor Kiyosi Itô and his seminal contributions to probability theory. It is awarded every two years to the best paper in Stochastic Processes and their Applications published in a period of two years. The winner of Ito Prize 2023 are Alexander Iksanov (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine) and Andrey Pilipenko (Institute of Mathematics of Ukrainian National Academy of Science & Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Ukraine) for their paper "On a skew stable Lévy process", published online on 14 November 2022.

The Ethel Newbold Prize - call for nominations The Ethel Newbold Prize is to be awarded biannually to an outstanding statistical scientist in early or mid-career for a body of work that represents excellence in research in mathematical statistics, and/or excellence in research that links developments in a substantive field to new advances in statistics. In any year in which the award is due, the prize will not be awarded unless the set of all nominations includes candidates from both genders. The award consists of the prize amount of 2500€ together with an award certificate. The awardee will be invited to present a talk at the following Bernoulli World Congress, Bernoulli-sponsored major conference, or ISI World Statistics Congress. The nomination should include a letter outlining the case in support of the nominee, along with a curriculum vitae. Winner of Doeblin Prize 2022 Yinon Spinka (University of British Columbia) has been awarded the 2022 Wolfgang Doeblin Prize. The International Day of Women in Statistics and Data Science The Caucus for Women in Statistics (CWS) and the Portuguese Statistical Association (SPE) have launched an International Day for Women in Statistics and Data Science (IDWSDS). The first annual celebration was organized online on October 11. The main goal was to showcase women’s contributions to the field, to connect women statisticians and data scientists around the world, to encourage collaborations among statistical societies, to encourage statistics and data science to become more inclusive and diverse and to bridge statistics and data science. Extreme Value Analysis (EVA 2023) June 26 - July 1, 2023 The conference brings together researchers in Extreme Value Theory, Methods and its Applications. The conference will be hosted by Bocconi University. XVI Latin American Congress of Probability and Mathematical Statistics (CLAPEM) July 10 – 14, 2023 CLAPEM, promoted by the Latin American Society of Probability and Mathematical Statistics (SLAPEM) and the Latin American Regional Committee of the Bernoulli Society, is the main event in these fields in the region. It takes place every two/three years and attracts researchers and students from the most important Latin American centers. A traditional program in a CLAPEM includes a series of short courses to introduce graduate students and young colleagues to major areas of current research and a series of invited plenary talks, invited sessions, and general poster and oral communication sessions.

The Ethel Newbold Prize - call for nominations The Ethel Newbold Prize is to be awarded biannually to an outstanding statistical scientist in early or mid-career for a body of work that represents excellence in research in mathematical statistics, and/or excellence in research that links developments in a substantive field to new advances in statistics. In any year in which the award is due, the prize will not be awarded unless the set of all nominations includes candidates from both genders. The award consists of the prize amount of 2500€ together with an award certificate. The awardee will be invited to present a talk at the following Bernoulli World Congress, Bernoulli-sponsored major conference, or ISI World Statistics Congress. Winners of the 2022 Rousseeuw Prize The King Baudouin Foundation has announced the winners of the first Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics. This biennial prize, worth 1 million USD, aims to reward excellence in statistical research which has a significant impact. The selected topic is Causal Inference in Medicine and Public Health. Half the prize amount will go to James Robins of Harvard University and half will be shared by Miguel Hernán (Harvard University), Thomas Richardson (University of Washington), Andrea Rotnitzky (Universidad Torcuato di Tella, Argentina) and Eric Tchetgen Tchetgen (University of Pennsylvania). The international jury appointed by the King Baudouin Foundation selected the winners from the nominations received after a widely advertised call earlier this year. The jury consisted of its chair, David Hand (Imperial College), Lutgarde Buydens (Radboud University Nijmegen), Probal Chaudhuri (Indian Statistical Institute), Dianne Cook (Monash University), Roger Koenker (University of Illinois), Yanyuan Ma (Penn State), David Scott (Rice University), David Steinberg (Tel Aviv University), Jane-Ling Wang (UC Davis), and James Zidek (University of British Columbia). In memoriam: Ole Berndorff-Nielsen It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Ole Berndorff-Nielsen, former president (1993-1995) and one of the most eminent members of The Bernoulli Society. Bernoulli Society General Assembly
Bernoulli Society General Assembly (GA) will be held virtually on Wednesday 6th of July 2021, 15:00-16:30 Central European Summer Time, 09:00-10:30 US Eastern Daylight Time, 21:00-22:30 Beijing-Hong Kong Time. Reports from the Executive Committee members and a summary on Bernoulli Society's other activities and initiatives will be available via a web-link after the zoom meeting registrations. Zoom registration link will be provided three weeks before the meeting date.
Nominations for the 2023 Willem van Zwet Medal
This biennial Bernoulli Society Medal aims to recognise special service to the Bernoulli Society. The Medal is in honour of Willem van Zwet, who served Bernoulli Society and its aims in many special ways.
Nominations for the European Regional Committee of Bernoulli Society
According to the statutes of the European Regional Committee of the Bernoulli Society, seven of the sixteen members will step down by the end of 2022. As a result, seven new members need to be elected for a four-year term starting on Jan 1st 2023.
A group of at least five European members of the Bernoulli Society can nominate further candidates. Additional nominations will force an election among European members of the Bernoulli Society. To celebrate this occasion, the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences are organizing a high-profile conference, representing modern probability, graph theory and networks, information theory, dynamical systems, number theory and other fields in Rényi's spirit. That is: not respecting strictly the borders between these and possibly other areas of pure and applied mathematics.
International Symposium on Nonparametric Statistics (ISNPS2022) June 20 – 24, 2022 The conference has been postponed to 2022 and it will bring forth recent advances and trends in several areas of nonparametric statistics, in order to facilitate the exchange of research ideas, promote collaboration among researchers from all over the world, and contribute to the further development of the field. The program will include plenary talks, special invited talks, invited talks, contributed talks and posters on all areas of nonparametric statistics.
42nd Conference on Stochastic Processes and their Applications (SPA) June 27 - July 1, 2022 Previously scheduled for July 2021, the conference will take place in 2022. SPA Conferences are organized under the patronage of the Bernoulli Society and can justifiably be regarded as the most important international scientific meeting on the theory and applications of stochastic processes. They are held annually except for the years when the World Congress in Probability and Statistics takes place. This iteration is hosted by Wuhan University. The conference contains 11 plenary talks, including Itô Prize lecture, Medallion lecture, Doeblin Prize lecture, Medallion lecture and Doob lecture. There are 23 invited sessions (including a “Bernoulli Society New Researcher Award” session) and 27 contributed sessions, 150 talks in sum, covering the recent developments in the theory and applications of stochastic processes. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the conference will be organized in hybrid format: in person for domestic participants and online for international speakers.

EMS 2022 Moscow cancelled In reaction to the military aggression by the Russian Federation, the Executive Committee of the Bernoulli Society, in consultation with the European Regional Committee, has decided to cancel the European Meeting of Statisticians 2022 in Moscow. We appreciate the significant efforts that have been invested in the preparation of this meeting. We express our deepest sympathy and support to the Ukrainian people.
Expression of interest to host the 34th EMS in 2023 The European Regional Committee (ERC) of the Bernoulli Society invites interested parties to express their interest to host and organize the 34th European Meeting of Statisticians in 2023. One World YoungStatS Webinar April 20, 2022 The next One World webinar, organized by YoungStatS, will be dedicated to Bayesian approach to Structural Equation Modeling. Selected young researchers active in this area will present their recent contributions. The One World Probability Seminar (Virtual) The One World Probability project is an online platform for research seminars, workshops and schools in probability theory. Started during the Covid-19 epidemic in 2020, the project intends to bring together researchers from all over the world in a virtual and inclusive environment. One World Extremes Seminar (Virtual) The One World Extremes Seminar is an initiative to keep researchers with an interest in Extreme Value Theory (EVT) virtually connected in novel ways. It features both theoretical advances and important applications of EVT. Asia-Pacific Seminars in Probability and Statistics (Virtual) The seminar was created as a permanent forum for good research in the field, with the aim to counterbalance the restrictions imposed by pandemic and to still promote scientific exchange and cooperation. Rényi 100 Conference June 20 - 23, 2022 Alfréd Rényi was born on the 20th of March 1921. To celebrate this occasion, the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences are organizing a high-profile conference, representing modern probability, graph theory and networks, information theory, dynamical systems, number theory and other fields in Rényi's spirit. That is: not respecting strictly the borders between these and possibly other areas of pure and applied mathematics.
International Symposium on Nonparametric Statistics (ISNPS2022) June 20 – 24, 2022 The conference has been postponed to 2022 and it will bring forth recent advances and trends in several areas of nonparametric statistics, in order to facilitate the exchange of research ideas, promote collaboration among researchers from all over the world, and contribute to the further development of the field. The program will include plenary talks, special invited talks, invited talks, contributed talks and posters on all areas of nonparametric statistics.
42nd Conference on Stochastic Processes and their Applications (SPA) June 27 - July 1, 2022 Previously scheduled for July 2021, the conference will take place in 2022. SPA Conferences are organized under the patronage of the Bernoulli Society and can justifiably be regarded as the most important international scientific meeting on the theory and applications of stochastic processes. They are held annually except for the years when the World Congress in Probability and Statistics takes place. This iteration will be hosted by Wuhan University. The conference will be organized in hybrid format: in person for domestic participants and online for international speakers.

64th World Statistics Congress 2023 July, 16-20, 2023 The congress series is organized by the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and the Bernoulli Society is participating in the series as an association of ISI. It brings together statisticians and data scientists from academia, health sector and business, junior and senior professionals, in an inviting environment.
