* C(PS)^2 re-assembled. The Committee on Probability and Statistics in the Physical Sciences  (C(PS)^2) has been reassembled since August 2011, under the auspices of the Bernoulli Society. 4- OBITUARIES

Paul Meier passed away on August 7,2011 in New York, NY, USA, age 87.  The statistician who promoted the use of randomized trials in medicine is best known for introducing, with Edward L. Kaplan, the Kaplan–Meier estimator, a tool for measuring how many patients survive a medical treatment. Read an obituary at The Lancet website doi:10.1016/S0140-6736(11)61438-4.

* IMU-Net 49b: Special issue the Blog on Mathematical Journals.

The IMU and the ICIAM have created a joint working group to discuss the issue of why a rating of  mathematical journals is desirable, and submitted a detailed proposal for journal rating. * ITÔ PRIZE 2011

The Itô Prize 2011 was awarded to Nathalie Eisenbaum and Haya Kaspi for their paper entitled On permanental processes, published in Stochastic Processes and Applications, Volume 119, Issue 5, May 2009, pages 1401-1415. * WOLFGANG DOEBLIN PRIZE 2012

 

The Bernoulli Society welcomes nominations for the first Wolfgang Doeblin Prize to be awarded in the 8th World Congress in Probability and Statistics in Istanbul, 2012.

The Prize is to honour the scientific work of Wolfgang Doeblin. It will be awarded for outstanding work in the field of probability, to a single individual who is at the beginning of his or her mathematical career.

The Bernoulli Society has initiated a new prize to recognize an

outstanding survey article in probability. The award is biennial, the

first of which  to be presented at the Bernoulli World Congress in the

Summer of 2012.  (Watch for later news about a companion biennial

award in 2014 for mathematical statistics.)

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: According to the award specifications,

nominations exclude self-nominations,  and can otherwise be

submitted to the  committee chair

Nominations should include full name and email address of both the

nominee and nominator, as well as a pdf  file of the published article.

Nominations should be submitted by NOVEMBER 30, 2011.
