4- OBITUARIES Paul Meier passed away on August 7,2011 in New York, NY, USA, age 87. The statistician who promoted the use of randomized trials in medicine is best known for introducing, with Edward L. Kaplan, the Kaplan–Meier estimator, a tool for measuring how many patients survive a medical treatment. The Bernoulli Society welcomes nominations for the first Wolfgang Doeblin Prize to be awarded in the 8th World Congress in Probability and Statistics in Istanbul, 2012. The Prize is to honour the scientific work of Wolfgang Doeblin. It will be awarded for outstanding work in the field of probability, to a single individual who is at the beginning of his or her mathematical career.
