You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by October 30th. ________________________________________ General News The Bernoulli Society General Assembly approved new office appointment Adam Jakubowski (Nicolaus Copernicus Univ., Torun, Poland) became the new President of the Bernoulli Society and Victor Panaretos (EPFL Lausanne, Switzerland) became the President-Elect. We thank previous President Claudia Klüppelberg for her dedicated work and steering of the society in the past years. Call for nominations of President-Elect and Council Members At the General Assembly of the Bernoulli Society, held online on July 8th, 2021, a Nominating Committee was established. It consists of Adam Jakubowski (President of the BS), Victor Panaretos (President-Elect, Chair), Herold Dehling, Leonardo Rolla, Christina Goldschmidt, Marcos Valdebenito, Gesine Reinert, Gerda Claeskens, Zengjing Chen, Juan Carlos Pardo Millán and Song Xi Chen (Scientific Secretary). The task of the committee is to make nominations for the office of President-Elect (2023-2025) and for ordinary Council members for the term 2023-2027. Marloes Maathuis (ETH, Zurich) has been awarded the 2021 Ethel Newbold Prize The Ethel Newbold Prize for excellence in statistics is awarded every 2 years. The name of the prize recognizes the historically important role of women in statistics. The prize itself is for excellence in statistics without reference to the gender of the recipient. The Ethel Newbold Prize is generously supported by Wiley. ________________________________________ Highlighted Events Concentration Inequalities in Machine Learning September 15, 2021 The webinar "Concentration inequality in Machine Learning" organized by the Young Researchers Committee of the Bernoulli Society will take place on September 15th at 5 pm (CEST). Selected young European researchers active in probability and machine learning will present their recent contributions. The meeting will take place online. Participation is by invitation only. International Conference on Robust Statistics (ICORS) September 20 - 24, 2021 The conference has been an annual international conference since 2001. The aim of the conferences is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in robust statistics, data analysis and related areas. This includes theoretical and applied statisticians as well as data analysts from other fields, and leading experts as well as junior researchers and graduate students. Frontier Probability Days (FPD’20) December 3-5, 2021 The Frontier Probability Days is a regional workshop, now postponed to 2021 at the University of Nevada. Its purpose is to bring together mathematicians, both regionally and globally, who have an interest in probability and its applications. FPD aims to complement other regional conferences in Probability that are held annually elsewhere in the United States. 6th IMS Asia Pacific Rim Meeting (to be announced) 2023 The Institute of Mathematical Statistics APRM will provide an excellent forum for scientific communications and collaborations for the researchers in Asia and the Pacific Rim, and promote communications and collaborations between the researchers in this area and those from other parts of the world. The program covers a wide range of topics in statistics and probability, presenting recent developments and the state of the art in a variety of modern research topics and in applications Invited session proposals are now being considered. Rényi 100 Conference June 20 - 23, 2022 Alfréd Rényi was born on the 20th of March 1921. To celebrate this occasion, the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences are organizing a high-profile conference, representing modern probability, graph theory and networks, information theory, dynamical systems, number theory and other fields in Rényi's spirit. That is: not respecting strictly the borders between these and possibly other areas of pure and applied mathematics. International Symposium on Nonparametric Statistics (ISNPS2022) June 20 – 24, 2022 The conference has been postponed to 2022 and it will bring forth recent advances and trends in several areas of nonparametric statistics, in order to facilitate the exchange of research ideas, promote collaboration among researchers from all over the world, and contribute to the further development of the field. The program will include plenary talks, special invited talks, invited talks, contributed talks and posters on all areas of nonparametric statistics. 42nd Conference on Stochastic Processes and their Applications (SPA) June 27 - July 1, 2022 Previously scheduled for July 2021, the conference will take place in 2022. SPA Conferences are organized under the patronage of the Bernoulli Society and can justifiably be regarded as the most important international scientific meeting on the theory and applications of stochastic processes. They are held annually except for the years when the World Congress in Probability and Statistics takes place. Virtual Bernoulli Society General Assembly (GA) The Bernoulli Society General Assembly will be held virtually on Thursday, July 8th 2021, 13:00-14:30 UTC (15:00-15:30 Central European Summer Time, 09:00-10:30 US Eastern Daylight Time, 21:00-22:30 China Standard Time). Reports from the Executive Committee members and a summary on Bernoulli Society’s other activities and initiatives will be available via a web-link after registration in the Zoom meeting. While members can ask questions directly in the GA, members can also ask questions about the subjects mentioned in the GA document and the agenda up to 72 hours prior to the meeting on July 8th, which will be answered during the meeting. Bernoulli Society New Researcher Award 2021 The New Researcher Award recognizes the work of outstanding young researchers who are members of the Bernoulli Society. This year the award was for innovative contributions in the field of Mathematical Statistics. Out of 22 applicants, the award committee chose the following new researchers for the award: Fang Han (University of Washington), Aaditya Ramdas (Carnegie Mellon University) and Anru Zhang (University of Wisconsin-Madison). Each of the above awardees is invited to deliver an invited talk at the Bernoulli Society New Researcher Award Session at the 63rd ISI World Statistics Congress, which takes place virtually from July 11-16, 2021. They received funding from the Bernoulli Society for their conference registration.
Ewain Gwynne wins inaugural David G. Kendall Award The David G. Kendall award for young researchers is awarded jointly by the Bernoulli Society and the Royal Statistical Society to recognize excellent research in Mathematical Statistics and in Probability Theory. The award is in honor of David G. Kendall, who was the first president of the Bernoulli Society, and was awarded the Guy Medal in Silver (1955) and in Gold (1981) of the RSS. The Bernoulli Society is proud to announce that the inaugural award for 2021 is given to Ewain Gwynne (University of Chicago).
Willem van Zwet Medal awarded to Maria Eulália Vares Our dear colleague Maria Eulália Vares has been awarded the inaugural Willem van Zwet Medal for Special Service to the Bernoulli Society in recognition of her outstanding service to the Bernoulli Society as member and chair of the Publications Committee, and as editor of Stochastic Processes and their Applications (SPA). She played a key part in negotiations with Elsevier concerning the Bernoulli Society’s journal Stochastic Processes and their Applications, showing great leadership in helping to obtain better prices and open access conditions for SPA and initiation of Elsevier's support for young researchers and students to participate in Bernoulli Society sponsored meetings, among other benefits. She has also served the Latin American Regional Committee and joined in organization of Bernoulli-sponsored events such as the Brazilian School of Probability, thus promoting the development of Probability and Mathematical Statistics in Latin America.

Bernoulli-IMS 10th World Congress in Probability and Statistics (BS-IMS-WC) July 19 - 23, 2021 This quadrennial joint meeting is of steadily increasing importance to the scientific vitality of the fields of statistics and probability and their applications. Bernoulli-IMS Young Researchers Pre-Meeting 2021 July 17 - 18, 2021 The Bernoulli Society and the IMS are co-sponsoring a two-day pre-meeting for young researchers right before the Bernoulli-IMS World Congress in Korea. The main objectives of the pre-meeting in 2021 are: (1) to stimulate interest of international young researchers in a rapidly emerging field; (2) to give support and perspective to young researchers with regard to mapping out their future career - especially for participants from developing countries; and (3) to allow young researchers with common research interests to network amongst their peer group. The two-day Young Researchers pre-meeting 2021 dedicates the first day to the academic theme of Data Science. The second day is dedicated to a series of presentations and group discussions that pertain to career development. This is complemented by several mini-talks, group discussion, and poster session by the young participants.
63rd ISI World Statistics Congress 2021 (ISI-WSC) July 11 - 15, 2021 The scientific programme will introduce the latest developments in statistical research and practice through presentations, discussions and a series of short courses; the virtual exhibition will showcase the work and products of those who support our profession. There were 4 plenary speakers and 7 (young research awardees) early career speakers who gave live talks (two times each) to a worldwide audience. The main part of the program contained 23 live discussion sessions conducted over a 24 hour clock across various time-zones. These sessions featured a selection of 600 prerecorded research talks that were uploaded by researchers from across the world. Over 2500 participants registered worldwide, interacting outside of talk in zoom rooms via virtual coffee gardens and ice breaker sessions. Our many congratulations to Leif Doring (Chair) and the organizing committee for a successful hosting of a very innovative symposium. He had served the Bernoulli Society in several eminent functions, most notably as member and chair of the European Regional Committee (1969–1980) that organizes the European Meetings of Statisticians, as BS President (1987–1989), and as Editor-in-Chief of Bernoulli (2000-2003). Foreword Dear Members of the Bernoulli Society,These are times of hardship and worry for all of us, and I hope that we will survive this without great damage. As more or less expected, we had to postpone our World Congress in Seoul this August, due to travel restrictions worldwide, but also out of responsibility for our speakers and participants, also for all local helpers. Our sympathy is with all of them, and in particular with the local organizing committee, led by Hee-Seok Oh, and all other colleagues who have worked so hard for many years for this important Congress to happen. The Bernoulli-IMS World Congress has been postponed to July 19-23, 2021. The Young Researcher Meeting will also be postponed and happen during July 17-18, 2021.

It consists of Claudia Klüpperbeg (President of the BS), Adam Jakubowski (President-Elect, Chair), Juan Carlos Abril, Michael Beer, Herod Dehling, Zenghu Li, Marloes Maathuis, Aihua Xia and Song Xi Chen (Scientific Secretary). ***Bernoulli Society New Researcher Award 2021 The BS welcomes applications for the award. Each awardee shall deliver a talk at a special invited session during the ISI-WSC 2021, and will receive a funding up to 1000€ to offset travel and other expenses. Bernoulli News will publish their pictures and a paragraph about their work. Eligible candidates are active researchers in Mathematical Statistics who obtained the PhD degree on or after March 1st, 2015, and who are regular members of the Bernoulli Society. Female candidates get 1 extra year for each child born since receiving the PhD. ***Byeong Park wins the 33rd Inchon Award in Science and Technology Our former Scientific Secretary, Byeong Uk Park (Seoul National University) has received the 33rd Inchon Award, which is recognized as one of the major awards in Republic of Korea. Inchon is the pen name of a famous Korean who established "Korea University", "Dong-A Daily News" (a very popular newspaper in the nation) and held the office of Vice-President of Republic of Korea about 70 years ago. Professor Park won the award in the field of Science and Technology for the first time in statistical science. Each recipient of the award is presented with the Letter of Citation, a medal, and a cash prize of 100M Korean Won. Congratulations!
