***Klaus Krickeberg's "Friend of Vietnam" Medal

On the July 16, 2018 the President of Vietnam awarded Klaus Krickeberg, former president of the Bernoulli Society, the medal «Friend of Vietnam» for «positive essential contributions to the development of the Vietnamese health sector". The Vietnamese Minister of Health presented him with the medal on February 25, 2019 in a ceremony in her Ministry. Krickeberg had already lectured in 1974 on Stochastic Point Processes to young research mathematicians in Hanoi; they published these lectures in book form. Later on he guided one of them to a Thesis on the “Knox Test”. He then switched gradually to Public Health, which is a very “stochastic” field. For instance, stochastic modeling is an indispensable tool for studying the evolution of infectious diseases in populations, which in turn is the main tool for designing immunization campaigns.  By contrast, the main issue in dealing with non-infectious diseases is the study of risk factors, which rests on models in mathematical statistics.

The former President of the Bernoulli Society, Ole Eiler Barndorff-Nielsen, has recently published a book "Stochastics in Science: Some autobiographical notes" (published Forlaget Morgenstjerne) which can be of great interest for our community. Summary: "The book gives a kaleidoscopic view of the life of a mathematical scientist. It aims to provide an impression of how multifaceted and fascinating such a life can be, in relation to other scientists. Much of the book can be read without any background knowledge of mathematics, but here and there brief indications of the author's own work are included at stepping stones in the narration. It contains a gallery of remarkable personalities and of historical accounts not available elsewhere. And the author's intense interest in Richard Wagner's operas occasionally shines through."

***62st ISI World Statistics Congress 2019

August 18-23, 2019

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Bernoulli Society (BS) invites the submission of proposals for BS-sponsored Invited Paper Sessions (IPS) at the 2019 ISI World Statistics Congress, to be held from 18 to 23 August 2019 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Proposals can be submitted as of 1 January 2018 using the electronic submission system on the WSC website.

If you wish that your proposed session is considered as a BS-sponsored session, please indicate this by choosing the Bernoulli Society as the primary related ISI Association in the relevant field. If you wish to list more than one Association, please note that your proposal will first be reviewed by the primary Association, under the guidance of its representative on the SPC.

Deadline for IPS proposals: 31 March 2018.

Each proposal should include: (1) a paragraph describing and justifying the proposed session; (2) a list of speakers and discussants that have agreed to participate; (3) an organizer, as well as a potential replacement in case that organizer declines. The selection criteria will take into account scientific quality, impact, and diversity. For Bernoulli Society sessions specifically, an effort will be made to strike a proper balance between statistics and probability in light of the typical composition of the body of WSC attendees.
