* The next Ordinary Meeting of the Bernoulli Society General Assembly (GA) will take place at the ISI Dublin WSC on Thursday 25 of August, 2011, from 13.00 to 15.00 hrs. Those members participating in this Congress please write it down in your agenda. All members are welcome to make suggestions for the Open Floor Discussion part of this GA. Please contact any member of the Bernoulli Society Executive Committee.
* New international web-based mentor programme for Ph.D students in statistics and probability at universities in developing countries is launched, sponsored by the International Statistical Institute and the Bernoulli Society. Ph.D students enrol the programme by internet and are put in contact with volunteer senior statisticians. The programme is based in Oslo, see http://statmentoring.nr.no to find out more on what the programme does. If you wish to join as mentor, please enrol here: http://statmentoring.nr.no/statmentoring/index.php/Mentor_form. Students can join here: http://statmentoring.nr.no/statmentoring/index.php/Student_forms.
4.- CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR DOEBLIN AND OUTSTANDING
SURVEY ARTICLE IN PROBABILITY PRIZES
* WOLFGANG DOEBLIN PRIZE 2012
The Bernoulli Society welcomes nominations for the first Wolfgang Doeblin Prize to be awarded in the 8th World Congress in Probability and Statistics in Istanbul, 2012.
The Prize is to honour the scientific work of Wolfgang Doeblin. It will be awarded for outstanding work in the field of probability, to a single individual who is at the beginning of his or her mathematical career.
The Wolfgang Doeblin Prize is generously supported by Springer. The awardee will be invited to submit to the journal Probability Theory and Related Fields a paper for publication as the Wolfgang Doeblin Prize Article, and will also be invited to present a Doeblin Prize Lecture in a later Conference on Stochastic Processes and their Applications.
Each nomination should offer a brief case in support and should be sent to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by 30th November 2011.
* BERNOULLI PRIZE FOR OUTSTANDING SURVEY ARTICLE IN
PROBABILITY
The Bernoulli Society has initiated a new prize to recognize an
outstanding survey article in probability. The award is biennial, the
first of which to be presented at the Bernoulli World Congress in the
Summer of 2012. (Watch for later news about a companion biennial
award in 2014 for mathematical statistics.)
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: According to the award specifications,
nominations exclude self-nominations, and can otherwise be
submitted to the committee chair
David Aldous via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Nominations should include full name and email address of both the

* The Executive Committee and Council of the Bernoulli Society approved a special issue of the Bernoulli Journal for the year 2013 to commemorate the 300 anniversary of the publication of the 'Ars Conjectandi' by Jacob Bernoulli. The guest editors will be Richard Davis and Thomas Mikosch. It will consist of a series of invited papers that will provide a glimpse at future directions in probability and statistics from new application areas, to the development of new models, to the emerging interfaces between statistics and probability with other sciences, as well as essays on the future of probability and mathematical statistics. It will be in addition to the four numbers of the annual volume and will have electronic public open access.
* Bernoulli News: We would like to remind you that the deadline for submitting material to be published in the next issue of Bernoulli News is March the 31st. Due to a rather tight production schedule material reaching us later can only be included in the next issue.
* The 16th Workshop on Stochastic Geometry, Stereology and Image
Analysis, organized by the Centre for Stochastic Geometry and
Advanced Bioimaging at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Aarhus University will take place at Sandbjerg Estate, Soenderborg, Denmark, 5-10 June 2011. More information at
* The Applied Probability Trust will offer BernSoc members a 15% discount for the subscription to Advances in Applied Probability and Journal of Applied Probability. More information can be found at

* From 2011 on BernSoc will offer 70% reduction for members from developing countries plus a reduction for personal hard copy subscription of the Bernoulli Journal. The list of developing countries was also enlarged. For further information see http://www.bernoulli-society.org/index.php/news
MEMBERSHIP: Spread the news about Bernoulli Society Fees for 2011-70% reduction now for members from developing countries
Dear fellow members of Bernoulli Society,
We are once again asking for your help in promoting the society further within our community. The reason is that the Bernoulli Society Council has recently decided to introduce some extended benefits, but otherwise keep the membership fees for 2011 the same as for 2010 (like, e.g., free membership for PhD students). Please help us spreading the news among your colleagues, PhD students, postdocs or whoever might possibly be interested in joining the Bernoulli Society.
For example, members from developing countries are offered a 70% reduction now (instead of 50%) and receive an extra reduction for the personal hard copy subscription of the Bernoulli Journal. Moreover, the list of developing countries (see www.icce2010.org/docs/developingCountries.pdf) for the latter membership and subscription was extended for 2011. Further benefits have been achieved for all Bernoulli Society members. For full information and details, please check the membership information (www.bernoulli-society.org/index.php/membership/membership-information) in the new Bernoulli Society website (www.bernoulli-society.org/) or the recent issue of BERNOULLI NEWS
